The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) is a not-for-profit membership society dedicated to advancing the field of neurosurgery. Founded in the 1950s, the organization supports more than 11,000 members worldwide through networking, educational opportunities, publications, online courses, and in-person meetings and conferences.
As a lean organization with a heavy workload, CNS requires efficient financial systems and strong operational tools to manage complex activity tracking, support member services, and maintain high standards across its diverse programs.
Patricia Gaber, CPA, now the Controller for CNS, first joined the organization as a contractor hired through CNS’s accounting firm. “CNS was using Microsoft Dynamics GP as its accounting application, and there were some challenges. We need to track our activities in very granular ways, and that required a new GL account for each thing they needed to track. As a result, there was a 25-page chart of accounts. It was simply unmanageable.”
Gaber met BT Partners through the accounting firm and instantly liked the team. “BT Partners is an outstanding partner,” she says. “They are skilled, experienced, and hands-on in their approach.”
BT Partners was brought in through CNS’s accounting firm to help address their financial system challenges. They were selected for their expertise in nonprofit financial management and their ability to deliver a smooth transition to a more suitable platform.
BT Partners guided CNS through the implementation of a modern cloud financial management platform. They helped redesign processes to reduce complexity, streamline workflows, and improve activity tracking without the need for an excessively large chart of accounts.
The project focused on automation, better reporting capabilities, and tools that align with the organization’s lean structure and detailed tracking requirements. BT Partners provided hands-on support to ensure successful adoption and optimization.
The new financial platform has significantly improved efficiency and reduced administrative burden for the lean CNS team. Workflows are more streamlined, and the organization can track activities in the required detail without the previous system complexities.
Previously, accounting for prepaid expenses required staff to maintain complex spreadsheets to calculate and track amortizations. Now, the entire process is automated. For example, leading up to CNS’s annual meeting, it collects registration fees from members and pays hotel, catering, and venue deposits. CNS can create an amortization schedule for the expenses, establishing rules to expense the assets when the event begins. Similarly, it establishes a schedule to recognize the revenue from corporate sponsors and member registrations. “We easily save 40 hours of time during our annual meeting period and additional time throughout the year for smaller events,” Gaber says.
These improvements have allowed staff to focus more on mission-critical work rather than manual financial tasks. The scalable solution better supports CNS’s educational programs, events, and member services while positioning the organization for continued success.
As the technology and performance enablement arm of Miller Cooper, BT Partners helps mid-market organizations drive business performance by combining strategic insight with technology that delivers clarity, visibility, and measurable results.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend BT Partners. They are much more than a vendor to us. They listen, ask questions, and give solid advice. They never overpromise and always overdeliver. You can’t ask for more than that.”
